2018/06/16 - A Passion that Burns

Slight deviations from the main story like these do come off as a nice break even for myself, partly since I can switch from drawing the same character in different poses to drawing the same chracters in different poses but in different (and sometimes less) clothing. Did I mention less clothing?

I may have answered this before, but some readers might recognize Roll's handgun featuring the rear stock bearing some similarity to the Matilda handgun from the Resident Evil (BioHazard) series. This is of course intentional as it's a play on the cast from Leon The Professional, except "Matilda" was spelt as "Mathilda" (but pronounced the same) in it, hence the name given to this handgun.

So far having a weekend update schedule has given me more flexibility working on other things during the weekdays. It feels quite favorable at the moment so it seems like it's going to stay. At least for now.



2018/06/02 - Aiming for the Top

Diverting off the usual course of events is something I always look forward to, even if it's just a change in the way canon events are presented. That way not only would I hit all the "key points" of the main story, I could also have something new for readers (and myself) to look forward to. Though wiggle room to allow for this sort of thing felt very minimal when establishing what we already know, it seems easier to take things in a different direction as the comic progresses.

Just in case: No, this isn't a pleasant mistake caused by my horrible sense of time.
Starting with this update, I would be doing a short test run for Saturday Morning (Friday evening PST) updates for a while (though still bi-weekly). I originally went for updates that take place around Tuesday afternoons (PST) when I first started working around a study schedule. Since this has no longer been the case for some time, I have decided to give pre-weekend updates a shot and see how things go from there.

So with that said, enjoy a (slightly) early RMDL!

It felt pretty obvious when working on this page that it follows the "see enemies to fight in the next chapter" cliffhanger method seen in all sorts of stories. Thankfully the base script doesn't seem like I'll need to rely on this again so I would like to treat this as a one (two?) off and just focus on the next part.

And so this concludes Chapter 4 of this Megaman Legends manga adaptation! I would like to take this chance to thank all you readers for being so patient with page releases! I would also like to confirm that Chapter 5 is being prepared as we speak, and I would make an announcement and teaser for things once it's ready!

2017/05/31 - The client's face's still intact. Job's still done.

One of the bits of official art of Roll that seems to be overlooked often is the one where she's holding a gun-like utility. Being one of the earliest pieces of art of this Roll I have come across, I always thought it would be really cool to have the (de-facto) brother-sister combination fight alongside each other in some capacity. Of course by the time I played through the game I was quite disappointed that it never came to be, so I thought I'd play this up to make things more interesting.

As for Roll's sudden upgrade into someone who can fight, I like to think of it as something in the Caskett/Casquet's blood; if Gramps and her parents are badasses, she should be too.



2017/05/24 - Tank Shreds.

I did another run of RMD for PSP over the weekend, and no matter how many times I see it it's amusing how a solid tank can fall apart from what looks like tiny-caliber machine gun fire.

Though in practice I prefer to think of the "machine gun arm" more like an autocannon for tearing apart armored targets.

2017/05/10 - Get Equipped (some more).

Looking back at what was actually accessible straight after being introduced to the (now-working) Support Car in-game, there was actually quite a few upgrades that could have been passed over before diving back into what could be a long battle.

With that in mind, I wanted to add a new upgrades to Rock's current arsenal to spice things up a little and to avoid repeating the previous big fights.



2017/04/26 - Get Equipped.

Because two guns are just plain better.

Possible one of the biggest ambiguous points of the DASH series is that we never see Rock change his weapons on-screen. I debated on this quite a bit, but decided to go the direction of Rock being capable of switching between his arms and weapons as an ability given to his unique armor set as opposed to the toy-like prosthetics. While prosthetics are indeed a canon aspect of this timeline, this particular case won't apply to Rock.



2017/04/12 - On the last episode of RMD...

Genius or not, Roll should have no method of preparing an armored car with such little time between an evening and morning. I bet she cut corners somewhere, I just know it...

Once again, I apologize for the sudden disappearance and lack of updates for almost a month. I have been taking time off to be hit by a fever and cold combination of sorts.

But enough about that, I managed to get an update ready despite all this so here it is!

Long story short: Some keen viewers may have spotted the subtle change in design (visible hair aside), and I've been planning this payoff since Chapter 2 (though how exactly it would happen changed a bit along the way).

2017/03/08 - Just too much of her parents in her.

A discussion I had sometime earlier last month revolved around the Caskett/Casquet family, especially how the disappearance of Roll's parents may have affected Gramps and his possible reluctance in sending his remaining granddaughter off to danger.

With that said, I kind of like how the "hazy" effect came grainy and like a comic scan. Also due to Switch-related incidents (Breath of the Wild is AMAZING. Get it if you can!) I am going to have to hurry up with next page's Artwork! See you all next week!



2017/03/01 - Not going to Roll with the status quo.

In the games, Roll's responsibility to watch over Rock during his digouts had two different titles; "Operator" in Japanese, and "Spotter" in English. While both are real terms in modern military linguistics, both are completely different roles, with the latter being part of a sniper team along with all the other combatants. With that in mind, I enjoyed expanding the terminology of the Halcyon Days era to allow for both terms and at the same time have some reason to justify putting Roll into the action in several parts throughout this retelling.

And that's the hard part: Giving enough plot justification to allow for this instead of making it shoehorned in with no prior justification. This sequence alone went through multiple rewrites, ranging from some shoddy plot devices to some that felt like in bad taste (especially what the majority of the fanbase thinks of this Roll).



2017/02/22 - Here Comes A New Challenger! (1)

I was asked this a few times, and thought I'd share my thoughts on the latest page.

I remember playing the first game and right after (FINALLY!) defeating Bon Bonne with the cutscene that plays. Right when I regain control of Rock and reach the door, Roll says that she's coming as well. At first I thought she would be joining the fight as an NPC that can hold her own, but in the end it just turned out to be "Oh look at this pretty van I made from stolen parts, come back when you need me hahaha".

With that said, I simply want to make things interesting by giving her a bit more action!



2017/02/15 - "Excuse me, your honor..."

Once again, the actions the Bonnes have been pulling off so far does go beyond "admirable persistance" and towards the "Oh hell these guys are for real".

For the most part, this page pretty much follows the game's conversation when the Inspector barges in with an emergency. At least so far anyway.



2017/02/08 - Time to redraw the maps again

I'm probably overthinking things back when the game first came out, but I couldn't help but have doubts that Teisel and a few Servbots alone could dig a massive crater just in time for his boss battle. Fast-forward a decade and the infamous bootleg quiz game introduced Game Over-inducing explosives. The series could use more explosions, and so the math was easy.

So Happy New Year again everyone! Time to kick off the new year after a long break with the second-half of Chapter 4!



2016/12/28 - It always stems from the same factor: Motive

One of the elements which I found a little underwhelming about the original game was the complete lack of mention of the Mother Lode (or Great Legacy) despite being introduced right at the opening crawl (this applies to all versions of the game too, so it wasn't some dub-induced addition). Even though there is mention of undiscovered treasure on the island according to the current scene in the game which this page is following, it felt like an afterthought as it was glanced over so quickly in the conversation. As for this adaptation, their crash landing and seemingly accidental discovery of this island has definitely gotten Rock and Roll's attention.

So this will be the last update of this year! I would be taking at least a 2-week break before the second half of Chapter 4 continues. See you all in 2017!



2016/12/21 - An offer that can't be refused

Even with the lack of a clearly established global order, the life of an adventurer/Digouter must be terrible. Unless you or your group has made a name for themselves, you're treated as outsiders at best and thieves or even air pirates at worst on first sight. Not to mention unless you're that good at the job, your funds are basically in the red all the time (keep in mind that this is even without a mechanic who consumes copious amounts of funding on R&D and maintenance).

This is the week before the holidays begin, but one more page coming next week! So just for the weekends: Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!



2016/12/14 - This isn't Philantropy

One of the biggest criticisms I give about Roll is that in the game she is more or less presented as a character that revolves completely around Rock, and isn't given much development of her own standing besides being Rock's partner. On the other hand, this can be sort of handwaved by the fact that the storylines focused on Rock and his destiny (for lack of a better word), and partly being the sort-of norm for video games at the time (except not really, as many SNES/SFC games have proven).

At any rate, given Roll's presumed pragmatism and responsibility for family expenses, I want to take this chance in this comic to give her some focus and driving motive as her own character beyond a cute face (as important as it is!).

First, a big thanks to MLT, Space Apollo, and Buster Cannon from the MMLS forums for recommending some tweaks to the comic browser, and for helping me to troubleshoot some ongoing bugs with the mobile comic browser issues (mainly on Chrome) over the weekend!

So this concludes the "Round 2" against Tron, and the completion of the Protect City Hall section of the story!

With the appearance of the Gustav, I thought it was only natural to include the transport variant of the Drache found in the Misadventures prequel game. The Servbot behind it better be a good pilot though, since this time the balance's towards one side with Gustav only having one arm this time around. Makes you wonder what happened to it...

It really never is Rock's day in this adaptation. So far every single 'boss' he fights head-on has a second form when he is exhausted just fighting the first (though maybe not so much for the Ferdinand fight).

And so concludes Chapter 3 and its one-week updates that has led up to its completion! Unfortunately, this also means I would be going on a slight break to work on the groundwork for the next chapter. My schedule would be getting chaotic soon, but I'll make an announcement once I finalize the details.

The way I see it: Rock is obviously not Roll or Tron-level smart, but he's cunning enough to handle foes several times his size and strength.

I have added a small section in the comics pages where I will include some of my comments on each page. So far I have gone through pages here and there, but mainly the first 10 or so pages have been commented on (including links to the remade pages which came out more convenient than I first thought). So if you're curious to know what was going on in my head at the time I drew those, please check those out!

2016/03/02 - Hey look, actual damage!

First honors of actually landing a hit on Rock still goes to the Hanmuru Doll though (or possibly Roll).

Visited the temporary Mega Man Corner in Tokyo over the weekend which was set up to celebrate the Classic Collection coming to Japan. Been enjoying through the classics as well, and managed to get a closer look at the classic artwork in-person, as well as have a small trip through history with the stall set up displaying a number of original packagings for each game spanning through the entire franchise. At any rate, glad to have caught it in time before it ended!

2016/02/17 - Back and forth.

One thing that players may remember about the Ferdinand battle is that Tron uses the front wheels to fire off a kind of fire shockwave-thing, something which I had to think over when writing the scenario. While the Bonnes did have a mix-mash of tech at their disposal, I didn't want to have a plain fireball shockwave as they seemed too similar to the back and forth projectiles that is inevitable in battles like these. In the end, I compromised with the Ferdinand forcefully kicking up huge debris using this very same technique. Anyway, I hope this isn't too obscure of a change no less.

So finally, the first Bonnes boss battle is about to kick off! And just in time for christmas!

As a bit of insight for RMDL, I would like to do a bit of a trivia/info-dump about the next two pages:

These couple of pages were added in at the last-minute during planning with the intent of balancing the pace between Tron's sortie and the inevitable boss battle coming up. The basic idea was to expand on the events by show a bit more behind what happened inside City Hall while Rock is running around laying waste to the Bonnes' assault deployment. However, I am not sure whether I should have went ahead and drew these two pages as part of the main story (even if I had a bit of fun doing so).

I'm probably overthinking things, but either way I hope everyone enjoys the upcoming pages all the same!

In more personal news, I'll be planning my move back to Tokyo (in time for 5 years since RMDL first started, it's been a while!) next week. Thinking of sharing shots of the future workshop via Facebook and Twitter while I'm there!

As much as I like the idea of Rock fighting large quantities of much-larger enemies by stick close to them and picking out the others one by one, I can't help but get reminders of bad or excessive QTEs found in games (with notable exception of games made by Platinum because PRESENTATION).

2015/06/10 - The battle just keeps getting more and more Hiryu.

Looks like Rock's taken a liking to getting close-up on everything he fights, something the games hardly give any incentive to do such (I insist that this should be a thing).

I have started work on the mechanics profiles as of late, starting with the Drache and perhaps its variants while I'm at it. Expect previews coming soon!

On an unrelated note, I'll be in Tokyo again between 10th and 14th for a quick vacation and to take care of some personal stuff.

In between these two chapters, I wanted to revisit some earlier scenes in my own way. Redrawing the pages for the sake of replacing them didn't feel right (and just to remind me how much I foul up) so I decided to go about it in a different way.

I have only tested it on my own Xperia smartphone using Firefox and Chrome browsers (and so far so good), so sorry if they appear weird on your end! Closest thing I can imagine was that they got bound down or something and were untied once Rock got to them. Or perhaps there's another side to all this we don't know about...?

In other news, writeup for the "World of Halcyon Days" section has begun. This section is made for further reading to supplement the manga adaptation's take on the Megaman Legends lore. Fine details on Terra and the Halcyon Days era such as language, cultures, and technology will be covered in this section, and occasionally updated as the plot continues forward. I'm currently aiming for the update to take place around mid-November; let's see how much can be squeezed in between then and now!

Just following up from the last update: As mentioned in the latest page, It's very likely that the wheels and tires used by the Blumebear are tough enough to shrug off small attacks like gunfire from rifles (or are at least unreliant on air in their tires). Of course, their durability are useless against large cannons or a Buster shot.

I'm sure quite a few players have asked themselves before why can't they just stop the Blumebears by shooting out their tires. A few hints in the machine specs come to mind: Not only are their car tires huge, the Blumebear's maximum ground speed exceeds 200 km/h; it may not seem like much but this is actually incredible considering that the vehicle in question is improbably top-heavy.

With the latest page out, I can share this bit of trivia with everyone
In the original draft of the last two pages, Rock walks towards the Blumebears while bantering with things something along the lines of "they must be air pirates", "why are you doing this", "if I don't like your answer", etc. It was only when I hid the text during the coloring phase when I noticed that having Rock not saying anything was not only more in-character for him, but also played out just like the original games. Plus the silence made it seemed much funnier. For reference:

2014/03/26 - Been a while, but kept you waiting!

It's been quite a break for me to get things sorted at home and work, but hopefully now that things have calmed down a little after a major release I can resume these bi-weekly updates for a while. So have at the beginning of Chapter 2!

A little thing about the popular vending macine drinks from the game.
As some long-time players may already know, earlier Japanese releases of the game had some product placement with Otsuka Foods Company's "Oronamin C" drink which got localized as a normal canned soft drink. Having a chance to try it out during a visit to Okinawa, I decided to try some which could be bought from supermarkets, convenience stores, and common vending machines (of course). Given the context of the new page, I decided to give my thoughts on it.

Being a fan of enery drinks myself, I found these to be a nice pick-me-up to start off a day or before starting a long driving trip. Interestingly there appears to be at least two grades/versions of it, with the less-known one apparently a more concentrated version of it (and harder to find as far as I know). But as a very sweet drink from the royal jelly (a common ingredient in Japanese energy drinks), having some water afterwards is advised especially before hitting the road on a hot day.

As mentioned a couple of weeks back, I most likely needed some extra time to prepare for the upcoming chapters as larger priorities have come up. Unfortunately, I would have to put the main comic on a temporary hiatus until I manage to get a decent batch ready to get the schedule going again.

Ah, I've been waiting to draw and put this up for quite a while.

So here we have Leiji Matsumoto's popular pirate appearance worn by the Legends' resident pirate leader. A fitting combination I guess?

On the flip-side of things, I have been extremely busy with work over the past month (and probably bigger things to come). For some time to at least gather myself up, I may need to take things easily for a while. We'll see how things go from here.

Now what would a dramatic debut of the Bonnes be like without their own double page?

Seeing how it contrasted, I also decided to give the previous page a black background. It's no flashback like it's usually used, but just because I thought it felt appropriate anyway (i.e. because it looks cool).

There has been something discussed at a session with the group at MMLS earlier this week, so I'll repeat it here and in the FAQ in case anyone else is curious: RMDL will have no original characters (OCs); there may be minor derivatives or expansions based on existing ones, but absolutely no originals (with exception of unimportant background ones of course). I'm not good enough at writing to add them.

Edit (2013/10/03): Well do I feel silly after this mess-up... Fixed the spelling of the Gesellschaft and the grammatical errors. Thanks Dashe!

Without spoiling too much, I intend to have Amelia play a larger part in this adaptation beyond being a source of conversation for the main characters. For this, I decided on a more sharper appearance to show her off a bit more, along with a slightly more detailed outfit based on her original counterpart.

Perhaps the largest change would be the hairstyle; the original Amelia had some large hair up front, which didn't come out too well in practice, hence downplaying that bit which resulted in some kind of mullet.

It's probably been debated for a while in mixed communities; I have gotten quite a bit of feedback from several forums regarding my use of the Japanese terminology, especially since each side has their own preferences from what they first came across (English-speaking communities prefer the US dub, Japanese for the original terms, etc).

I grew up where I had easy access to both as imports, so I can't quite have a xenocentric preference for either, other than the combined experience I gained from playing both (though I still acknowledge the JP release by default, considering it was released during a time of poor translations).

So instead of just sticking to one of the two glossaries for this adaptation, I've decided to adopt them both to make the adaptation more expansive.

After a long wait, the Mechanics section has finally opened; starting with its first entry, the aptly-named Rockbuster!

After giving it some thought, it has been decided to switch back to the 'round' speechboxes for the comic to give it a more natural feel to it. Considering that readability was never a major issue to begin with, I suppose the compromise was unnecessary after all. Please tell me what you think!

For the majority of the time between these updates, I have been too busy finding out the cause of the problem plaguing the site; I may have found the solution, though only time will tell. But site problems or not, we're onto the next chapter!

It has come to my attention that there are some image display problems on the site; one of them being the logo which for some reason appears as a broken link when the page is refreshed normally. However, a hard refresh (Ctrl + F5) seems to fix the problem, at least until a normal refresh (F5) is pressed again.

Because the cause of the problem has not been resolved, I would like to request that if you suspect any broken links or errors in the page, please double-check by performing a hard-refresh on your browser. Thank you.

Some minor modifications made to the comic browser; now the page will not reset itself to show the latest page even when the page refreshes!

In addition to a new page, I have begun on doing some touching-up of the main site, and hoping to be done with it soon. What do you think so far?

As the prologue is (finally!) coming to an end, Chapter navigation has been added to the Comic Navi bars, as well as some minor tweaks; specifically, refreshing the comics section will reset the drop menus properly to avoid confusion.

As some agreed a couple of weeks ago, the idea of having Kattelox Island on their ridiculously specific map did not make enough sense to be justfied in the original game. Twisting the plot a bit here and there is what I'll probably find myself doing as the story goes on...

Also some new content this time; the Characters page has been updated, with some minor tweaks in the graphical layout of the site.
